CHICOPEE – On Saturday, October 19, 2019, Mayor Richard J. Kos attended the formal unveiling of a revolutionary new building product: the SolaBlock “Solar Masonry Unit or SMU” at Chicopee Mason Supply, 451 McKinstry Avenue in Chicopee.
“This product gives builders a great new way to add solar to a business without taking up valuable space,” stated Mayor Richard J. Kos, “It looks good and it will be cost-effective.”
This revolutionary wall system offers solar electric generation for city buildings, parking structures, schools, commercial buildings, and highway sound-walls with generations up to 9 Watts per block and 10 Watts per square foot of wall space.
“The Solar Masonry Unit is incredibly exciting – a robust concrete building block with a photovoltaic cell bonded into one face, “ says SolaBlock Co-Founder Patrick Quinlan. “It installs like a brick but generates an electric current from the sun while being a truly integral part of any structure or wall.”
This product is intended for commercial industrial use but a homebuilder can use the product also. The installed price is similar to the cost of installing a conventional brick wall. The block size is slightly bigger than an average brick, therefore, costing reasonably the same due to the use of less ‘bricks’ to create the same size wall.
