CHICOPEE CITY HALL REHABILITATION PROJECT CONTINUES TO PROGRESS FORWARD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 

CHICOPEE – Mayor Richard J. Kos wants to take this opportunity to express his appreciation for the patience given during the rehabilitation process. “Thank you, to each and every one of you, who have visited our building recently and shown understanding for the situation. They are working diligently to complete the project in a timely manner.”

As previous accounts of the City Hall Rehabilitation reports have stated, Mayor Kos would like to continue reporting the progress in a timely manner. Keeping the process transparent strengthens the accountability of the project’s managers. This also assists the appropriate entities in managing programs and activities for which they are responsible.

Designed to provide a clearer picture of the outcomes being performed by the following qualified contractors: American Environmental, Ayote & King, ATC, Guarducci Stained Glass Studios, T.J. Conway, Karls Excavating, Corcoran Plumbing & Heating, Wayne Griffin Electric, D.A. Sullivan, Calhess, Pilgrim Interiors, H. Carr, Morduct, Roberts Electric, Titan Roofing, Allied Fire, J. Egan Paining, Dos Concrete, and United Rentals, below is the most recent two-week breakdown of ongoing and completed activities:

Weeks Fourteen/Fifteen July 14-27, 2019

•    Repointing east side (Annex)

•    Control valves (3rd and 4th-floor bathrooms) 

•    Templating for windows (north side of City Hall)

•    Removal of sidewalk (west side of City Hall)

•    Metal framing, insulation and blocking (3rd and 4th-floor bathrooms)

•    Programming and wiring for controls

•    Piping for drinking fountains (3rd and 4th-floors)

•    Insulation of water pipes (3rd and 4th-floors)

•    Unload and build staging (Auditorium)

•    Removing metal window (east side of Auditorium)

•    Install tile backer board (3rd and 4th-floor bathrooms)

•    Cutting north side (Annex)

•    Valves for radiant heat panels (3rd and 4th-floor bathrooms)

•    Breaking down stage (Auditorium)

•    Sheet rocking and insulating walls (3rd-floor bathrooms)

•    Control wiring and programming (1st-floor Annex)

•    Connecting roof drains (lower Annex roof)

•    Opening up floor for 8x8 post and head off joist (Auditorium)

•    Rough wiring for attic track lighting (Auditorium)

•    Run PEX tubing (from 3rd to 2nd-floor)

•    Rebuilding lower parapet

•    Piping in mechanical room (City Hall)

•    Set up pf negative air machines

•    2x8s for deck infill (Tower)

•    Sounding Plaster (Auditorium)

•    Programming controls

•    Copper shelf at lower roof

•    Rough wiring for IT closet

•    Mockup of marble

•    Law Conference space demo

•    Taping (4th-floor bathroom)

•    Testing roof drain

•    Adjustment of staging planks

•    Installing, floor framing and pour footing (8x8 in voting vault)

•    Work on copper shelf membrane

•    Cutting on north side (Annex)

•    Rough piping for HVAC

•    Floor framing for 8x8 post

•    Installation of fire alarm devices

•    Metal flashing at copper shelf

“We are keeping up with the actual and planned progress and meeting projected deadlines, with no significant delays in the project,” said Lee Pouliot, Planning Director. “Our Project Manager, Robert Alder of NV5 has been a real asset in accomplishing these goals and staying on track.”

Mayor Richard J. Kos stated “City Hall was in need of extensive repairs and doing so now will prevent further deterioration and potential structural collapses of stonework from occurring. Completing the project now minimizes the potential for increased costs if further deterioration occurs.”

Lee M. Pouliot, Director of Planning & Development who has been the City lead on this project stated, “Chicopee City Hall is a well-known historic icon that defines Chicopee Center and provides an ever-present historic link to the City’s past.  The City’s founders realized the importance of such a structure for the civil and social events of the City.  This commitment ensures that Chicopee City Hall will continue to provide future generations with an invaluable link to our heritage and history while ensuring City Staff are provided a healthy workplace to provide services to the residents of Chicopee.”

The repair and construction project was estimated to cost nearly $16 million. However, the bidding of the project has resulted in the pricing of $11.7 to date. Repairs of the City Hall elevator were bid separately to secure grants of $250,000 which offset total repair costs of over $500,000 for the elevator.
