Mayor Richard J. Kos announced today that the City has signed a Disposal Agreement with F.P. McNamara Rubbish Removal, Inc. This Disposal Agreement will go into effect upon closure of the Chicopee Landfill on December 29, 2018.
It is important to note that this Disposal Agreement will not affect the current curbside trash, recycling, and yard waste pickup.
Currently the City pays $36 a ton to dispose waste. Under the Disposal Agreement between the City and F.P. McNamara Rubbish Removal, Inc. the City will pay the following amounts upon the landfill closure:
- FY 2019: $73 per ton
- FY 2020: $75 per ton
- FY 2021: $76 per ton
- FY 2022: $79 per ton
Since the start of the City’s Trash Reduction Program in May of 2017 there has been a 24% decrease in the amount of trash collected. During FY 17 the City collected 12,720 tons of trash, whereas during FY 18 the City collected 9,771 tons of trash. Recycling has increased in the City as a result of the Trash Reduction Program.
The Chicopee Landfill will remain open for resident drop off services until the closure on December 29, 2018. Chicopee residents must still pre-register with the Chicopee DPW by calling 413-594-3557 if they have not done so, and the existing permit system remains in place.
Upon closure of the Chicopee Landfill residents will still have the option to bring the following recyclable materials to the new Recycling Center to be located at Chicopee DPW. This recycling center will enable residents the opportunity to drop off certain recyclable materials locally rather than directing them out-of-town. A permit system will continue to be in place for residents. The DPW Recycling Center will begin operating in January 2019.
Below is the list of items that will be accepted next year at the DPW Recycling Center:
- Mattresses and Box Springs**
