Golf Course History
Chicopee Country Club with its rolling terrain, tree-lined fairway and fast, sloping greens is generally regarded as a fine championship course by area golfers. Through the years, this picturesque golf course has received accolades from publications such as Golf Digest, USA Today, and the New England Journal of Golf magazines. It has been touted as being among the best public courses in Massachusetts or being named as one of New England's top 100 golf courses, or being among those courses that provide the best value in Massachusetts.
Chicopee Country Club is located in the area of Chicopee fondly referred to as Johnnycake Hollow. It was 1965 when renowned golf course architect Geoffrey Cornish carved eighteen challenging fairways out of the beautiful woodlands adjacent to Westover Air Base and Chicopee Memorial State Park.
The driving force behind the development of a public golf course in Chicopee was then Mayor Ed Lysek. On June 24, 1964, "Big Ed" Lysek posed with the bulldozer at the groundbreaking ceremonies. He would be the first one to tee off the following year.
Today, the roadway into Johnnycake Hollow is named in Mayor Lysek's memory; it is a path through the woods to one mighty fine municipal course.
