Mayor Richard J. Kos has called a special meeting of the City Council for Thursday, May 25th at 6:30 PM in the City Council Chambers, to discuss the budget deficit facing the Chicopee Public Schools.
Mayor Kos and Superintendent Rege will discuss the possibility of further commitment from the City to address at least a portion of the deficit while exploring other ways to bridge gaps.
“I want to thank Mayor Kos and the City Council for holding this meeting,” said Superintendent Richard Rege. “Our budget this year faces significant challenges but we are hopeful that with an additional increase in state funding, assistance from the City Council, attrition, and other cost saving measures that we can limit the impact of the deficit.”While there has been some discussion regarding potential teacher layoffs, there is now hope that they can be avoided.
“Education is the cornerstone of our community,” said Mayor Kos. “As Mayor and Chair of the School Committee, I am committed to addressing these budget issues so that there is a minimal impact both on the classroom and the taxpayer. These budget issues are not unique to our school system, but in addressing them we remain committed to providing a quality education to all of our students.”
